Why Do I Need to Have My Child's Safety Seat Checked? Motor Vehicle Crashes are the #1 killer of kids under 14, according to SAFE KIDS USA. Their statistics also show that 96% of parents believe they install their child safety seat correctly. Unfortunately, 82% of children placed in child safety seats are improperly restrained. The good news is that correct use of car seats and boosters does save lives. Infant seats have been shown to reduce fatal injury by 71%, and toddler seats by 54%. I will make sure your child is as safe as possible in your vehicle, to protect them from the greatest epidemic facing children in the United States. It is worth knowing your child is riding as safe as possible, both for your baby and for your peace of mind! Starting January 1, 2004, Illinois State Law requires all children to be in a child seat or booster until their 8th birthday. This is a primary moving violation, and you may be stopped and ticketed for a violation. More importantly, correct use of a booster seat can reduce a child's risk of injury in a crash by 59%, including serious head and abdominal injuries! Why Pay for This Service when My Police or Fire Department Does it For Free?Over the last few years, many departments and agencies in DuPage County have cut their child passenger safety programs. In other communities, free inspections have long waiting lists or may no longer be available. While free checkup events may still be available throughout the county, I may be able to offer more convenient appointment times and shorter waits than other fitting stations or events. Appointments are often available within 1-2 days of scheduling, sometimes the same day. Finally, some local organizations and police, fire or health departments may use inexperienced technicians or installers who are not certified to do inspections. SeatCheck.Net inspections are provided by a SAFE KIDS USA Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician and Safe Kids USA Senior Checker, recipient of the 2004 Kuska Award*. I have nearly 10 years of experience and have installed many hundreds of child seats. In addition, I attend quarterly updates, periodic refresher courses and various annual conferences on Child Passenger Safety, far beyond the basic recertification requirements. I have taken additional training courses in child passenger safety for school buses and for special needs children. As a member of DuPage County SAFE KIDS, I also volunteer my time doing free inspections at checkup events on behalf of various local organizations. I will spend the time to make sure you understand how to install a child seat correctly yourself. The instruction will not be rushed, as it often is at a large event or fitting station. I will check that your child seat can be properly installed in your vehicle, check it for damage and recalls, review the instructions for installation and make sure your child is seated properly in the carseat. Most importantly, I will help YOU learn to install it correctly. Finally, you are welcome to ask questions before and after your inspection on our free forums at Car-Seat.Org, by email or by phone. Either I or another technician, instructor or advocate will answer your questions as quickly as possible. Seatcheck.Net is listed as a Child Safety Seat Inspection Station by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and SAFE KIDS USA. Please remember this is more than a simple checkup, inspection or installation service; parents and caregivers should expect to spend some time to learn about installing and using child seats correctly. While I will make sure your child is as safe as possible, my main goal is to provide instruction and education for the parent(s) or caregiver. That will help you keep your kids safe every time they travel, in any vehicle! I also provide consulting and other services for parents, schools and organizations. These include speaking engagements, classes and assistance, carseat installation parties and also personalized assistance in selecting and purchasing the right carseat for your child and vehicle. Seatcheck.Net services are much less expensive than other professionals and tradespeople, and they may save the life of a child! Please contact me for further information. Free inspections can still be found in DuPage County. For a list, please visit SeatCheck.Net. * The Kuska award is presented to an individual who demonstrates extraordinary dedication to the field of child passenger safety. It is the highest individual award for certified child passenger safety (CPS) technicians in the state, presented at the Illinois Lifesavers Conference, sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois Traffic Safety Leaders. |
